Breast Enhancement: Breast Lift, Reduction, Reconstruction

At our Cobb County offices, convenient to those in both Marietta and Atlanta, we perform breast lift and breast reduction surgery to enhance breasts and increase our patients' sense of confidence and pride in their bodies.

Breast Lift

For many women, age, pregnancy, or genetics can cause the breasts to sag. Sagging breasts can make women feel self-conscious about their appearance and how their clothes fit, forcing them to dress and even to act older than they normally would. Increased support bras only offer a temporary solution to breast sagging. Women with sagging breasts do have another option, however. At Marietta Plastic Surgery in the Atlanta-area, we recommend the breast lift procedure to women with sagging breasts as a permanent and natural-looking way to rejuvenate the body. This procedure lifts and reshapes sagging breasts, and can even reduce the size of the areola. Often, the breast lift procedure is performed in conjunction with breast implants, to fully rejuvenate and reshape the breasts.

Breast Reduction

For women with disproportionately large breasts, our Atlanta-area practice offers breast reduction surgery. Women with very large breasts often feel self-conscious about the shape of their bodies. Fashionable clothing is normally designed for women with medium-sized breasts, and some large-breasted women can grow tired of being noticed only for their breast size. Because of negative attention and limited clothing choices, women with very large breasts often dress in baggy clothes to hide their shape. In addition to cosmetic concerns, women with oversized breasts are at risk for medical problems including shoulder, neck, and back aches. Our surgeons offer breast reduction surgery to resolve these issues.

Whether your breast enhancement goal is to decrease your breast size or to eliminate breast sagging, Marietta Plastic Surgery can design a procedure for you. In consultation, you and your surgeon can decide what procedure will best suit your cosmetic goals, and how that procedure can be adapted specifically to the results you want.

Breast Lift Procedures

We offer our Atlanta-area patients breast enhancement using one of three breast lift techniques.

Inverted-T: The most commonly used technique at our Atlanta-area practice, used for patients who want moderate or major lifting of the breasts. The surgeon makes an upside-down T-shaped incision that descends from the nipple and follows the natural contour of the breast. From this incision, the surgeon removes excess skin and moves the nipple and areola into a new, higher position.

Vertical "lollipop" is appropriate for those patients who want moderate lifting. The incision in this procedure goes around the areola and straight down to the breast crease. The surgeon then removes excess skin from the area outlined by the incision, and moves the nipple and areola to a higher position.

Periareolar or "doughnut" is available for patients with minimal sagging. The surgeon makes an incision around the areola and removes a donut-shaped area of skin. This procedure is often performed in conjunction with breast implants.

Each breast lift technique is designed to facilitate different cosmetic goals. Depending on the extent of sagging and the condition of your breasts, you and your surgeon will decide which procedure is best for you. Sutures are used to close all incision types, and breast lift patients can expect minimal scarring. However, scarring will depend on the procedure type that the patient has chosen in consultation with the surgeon.

To begin a breast reduction at our Atlanta-area office, the surgeon will first make an incision in the breast around the areola straight down to the natural breast crease. Then, working from the incision, the surgeon will remove skin, fat, and breast tissue until breasts are the desired size and shape. If the breasts are very large, the nipples and areola may need to be repositioned.

Once the tissue is removed, the surgeon brings the surrounding skin down and together to reshape the breast. Sutures close the incision, giving the breast its new contour.

After Breast Enhancement Surgery

Breast enhancement patients may experience some numbness, bruising, swelling or discomfort in the breast area for the first several days. Most patients are back to work in as little as a week following surgery for breast enhancement, however, they should continue to avoid strenuous activity and overhead lifting for at least three weeks.

For breast reduction patients, it is important to understand that breast-feeding may be difficult or impossible after surgery because the procedure removes a number of milk ducts leading to the nipples. For patients who have had the breast lift procedure, the ability to breast-feed should not be affected. In either case, future pregnancy may cause temporary breast enlargement and future breast sagging.

Atlanta-area women with questions about breast enhancement through breast lift or breast reduction procedures are encouraged to contact our office. We can provide you with answers, and will be happy to schedule a consultation.

Breast Reconstruction

Survivors of breast cancer have a new and better alternative in breast reconstruction. Deep inferior epigastric perforator, or DIEP flap breast reconstruction rebuilds breasts while preserving the abdominal muscles that are usually sacrificed in traditional reconstructive breast surgery. This advanced technique offers breast reconstruction without risking the quality of a patient's life.

Because DIEP flap reconstruction is a very technically demanding procedure requiring additional training not only in microsurgical technique but also in muscle-sparing flap dissection techniques, there are fewer than 10 centers in the country that routinely perform this operation. Dr. Fabian, a plastic surgeon trained in breast reconstructive microsurgery, brings this amazing medical advancement to Atlanta.

Breast reconstruction typically takes four to six hours depending on the extent of the procedure. Patients are given general anesthesia during this procedure. Lower abdominal skin and fat are used in the reconstruction. The blood vessels are attached to blood vessels in the chest using an operating microscope and high magnification.

After Breast Reconstruction

After the procedure, hospitalization is required for two to five days. Some patients may experience numbness, bruising, swelling, or discomfort at the incision sight. This is normal and will pass with time. Incision site pain is usually minimal, and can be controlled with medication, if necessary. Breasts will be bruised, swollen, and uncomfortable for at least a day or two.

Patients may also experience under-sensitivity, oversensitivity, or numbness in the breast skin. These symptoms usually fade as the swelling subsides over the next six weeks or so. In some patients, however, it may last a year or more, and occasionally may be permanent.

Most patients are back at work within three to four weeks of surgery but should continue to take it easy for four to six weeks. Although patients are ready to return to work or school, they should plan to limit rigorous activity for one month. Lifting anything over the head should be avoided for three to four weeks. The breasts will probably be sensitive to direct stimulation for two to three weeks, so physical contact should be avoided until the breasts are no longer sore. Because this is invasive surgery, patients normally have less energy for the first two weeks but look and feel much better by the third week.
