Facelift, Blepharoplasty, and Brow Lift Procedures

As a person ages, the underlying structure of the face begins to weaken and lose its structure, and skin can sag, causing a person to appear older, and even tired or angry. Deep furrows can develop in the forehead and lines can develop around the eyes. Many faces take on a droopy appearance as cheeks sink down, leaving deep wrinkles near the mouth. Sadly, no amount of sun protection or facial cream can fix this structural collapse, and people are left looking old or tired, often well before they should.

Facial Rejuvenation Procedures
Patients visiting our practice near Atlanta for a facelift procedure are typically in the operating room for two to three hours, depending upon their desired results, the condition of their skin, the shape of their face, and other factors.

Mid-Facelift
For our Atlanta-area patients who choose the mid- facelift, the surgeon makes incisions on the temples at the hair-line and in front of the ear. He then folds the skin back, moves the fat pads near the cheekbones to a higher position, and removes excess skin. Then, he pulls the skin back over the face and secures it with sutures.

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Atlanta-area residents may consider blepharoplasty (eyelid lift) to eliminate "bags" or puffiness in the lower eyelids. In the lower eyelid lift, the surgeon makes incisions just inside the lower lid and removes excess fatty tissue to eliminate bags under the eyes. In this procedure, no excess skin is removed, and, because incisions are made inside the eyelid, there is no visible scarring.
Problems in the upper eyelid may include excess or loose skin that hides the natural folds of the upper eyelids, excess skin and fine wrinkles, and/or puffiness in the upper eyelids. For an upper eyelid lift, the surgeon makes incisions in the natural smile crease below the lash line. Separating the skin from the underlying tissue, he removes excess fat, muscle, and skin, giving the eye a smooth and youthful appearance. Because the eye area heals quickly, scarring will be minimal.

Brow Lift
For Atlanta-area patients undergoing browlift surgery, the plastic surgeon makes three to five incisions along the scalp. He then inserts a tiny camera, called an endoscope, into one of the incisions so he can see the muscles and tissue beneath the skin. Through another incision, he lifts the skin away from the underlying tissue, and smoothes or removes the muscles beneath the skin so that the forehead substructure is firm. If the patient has determined in consultation that they also want their eyebrows lifted, the surgeon lifts them at this point, and secures them in their new position with sutures, finishing the procedure by suturing the initial incisions.

After Facial Rejuvenation Surgery
Over the next several days, numbness, swelling, bruising, and discomfort at incision sites and around the treated area are common, with swelling lasting anywhere up to two months. However, patients can be up in as little as one day, and back to work between five and fourteen days, limiting rigorous activity for several weeks. Patients should avoid prolonged heat and sun exposure in the months following surgery.
