Facial Contouring – Rhinoplasty, Cheek and Chin Augmentation, Otoplasty
At Marietta Plastic Surgery near Atlanta, we offer rhinoplasty, cheek augmentation, chin augmentation, otoplasty, and any number of procedures to improve the fundamental structure of the face.
Many people are unhappy with the structural components of their faces, citing anything from ears that stick out to under-defined cheekbones. Scientific studies have shown faces exhibiting symmetry are perceived to be more attractive than asymmetrical faces. Unfortunately, facial structure determines this symmetry, and a symmetrical facial structure is not something that can be obtained through use of makeup or diet and exercise. That is why, at Marietta Plastic Surgery, we offer a number of surgical procedures that can make small or large changes in the structure of the face.
Oftentimes, the nose is the most prominent source of asymmetry in a person's face, whether it is crooked, too large, or has a bump. Our Atlanta-area plastic surgeons recommend rhinoplasty as a means of correcting this source of facial asymmetry. By bringing the nose into balance with the rest of the face, rhinoplasty patients can dramatically improve their overall appearance. Rhinoplasty can increase or decrease the size of the nose, change the shape of the tip, bridge, or nostrils, and even change the angle between the nose and upper lip.
Many people who are unhappy with the appearance of their faces can indicate the exact features that they would change, from a bump in the nose to thin lips. Others have concerns that are less precise; they can only say that they would “like to look better.” Regardless of which category you fall into, a consultation with one of our plastic surgeons can help. If you want to improve your appearance, but don't know how, a cosmetic surgeon at our offices can give you recommendations. Drawing on his extensive experience with different facial structures, a cosmetic surgeon can tell you which procedures will make you look your absolute best. For those plastic surgery patients who already know which feature they would like to reshape, a consultation can provide you with information on the surgery and the results you can expect.
If you are interested in changing the structure of your face, surgeons can help you determine whether rhinoplasty, lip augmentation, chin augmentation, or any other procedure can help you. Contact Marietta Plastic Surgery to schedule a consultation with one of our experienced surgeons.

Nose Surgery
Your plastic surgeon performs rhinoplasty in order to reshape the nose. Appearance can be improved for those people who are dissatisfied with the shape and size of their nose. Nasal reconstruction was one of the first cosmetic procedures ever developed and is among those most frequently performed today. Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure in which deformities of the nose are corrected by removing, rearranging or reshaping bone or cartilage.
Reasons for Surgery
Reasons include reducing the size of the nose, removal of bumps as well as improving the angle of a nose. Conditions may be natural or due to external trauma to the face. This operation may also help patients who have difficulty breathing. The operation can be performed on all age groups, including teens and the elderly.
Before Surgery
A medical history along with a careful examination is conducted in order to evaluate your general health. Your surgeon will discuss with you the way your nose can look in relation to your other facial features. Digital photographs and computer imaging allow you and your doctor to work together to achieve your desired results. Pre-operative instructions may include the elimination of certain medications that contain aspirin in order to minimize the possibility of excess bleeding.
Method of Surgery
Surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia for total patient comfort. In most cases involving a reduction in shape or size of the nose, angle or removal of a hump, the skin of the nose is separated from the underlying structure of bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage are then reshaped and the skin re-draped over the surface. Patients who have a deviated septum may benefit by correction of this problem. The incisions are placed inside the nose, unless the surgeon uses an open approach, in which case a small incision is made across the tissue between the nostrils. In cases where the nostrils flare, the surgeon may make an incision at the junction between the nose and the skin of the upper lip to narrow the flared appearance. It is not unusual to combine rhinoplasty with chin augmentation to improve your profile.
Post-Operative Information
The recovery takes one to two weeks. Most people resume their normal activities within a week or two. Following surgery, a lightweight splint is applied to help maintain the new shape of the nose. The splint is removed within a week. Nasal splints may be inserted at the time of surgery to protect the septum. Nasal packing is rarely required anymore. There is always some postoperative stuffiness of the nose, especially when work has been done on the nasal septum. Pain is usually minimal and is controlled with medications. Bruising occurs around the eyes, but begins to fade within a few days. Discoloration usually disappears in two weeks.
Insurance
Your insurance company may pay for part of the costs associated with your surgery if it is performed as a result of nasal obstruction. It is recommended that you check with your carrier to determine if there is coverage.

Cheek and Chin Augmentation
In addition to the nose, the cheekbones and chin help define the complete facial profile. For those who feel their cheeks need to be lifted or their chins more prominent, Marietta Plastic Surgery offers cheek and chin implants made of synthetic materials proven safe and reliable. A wide variety of shapes and sizes is available to customize your facial profile. The procedure usually takes less than an hour. Chin implants are increasingly used in conjunction with rhinoplasty.

Oculoplastic Surgery
Cosmetic
The most common aesthetic oculoplastic procedures include eyelid surgery, cheek lift, and brow lift. The surgeons at Marietta Plastic Surgery are known for their techniques to correct or improve problems that have occurred from plastic surgery performed elsewhere.
Reconstructive
Oculoplastic eyelid surgery corrects congenital deformities like droopy upper eyelids (ptosis) in children and adults, lower lid deformities such as in turning of the eyelids (entropion) or out turning of the eyelids (ectropion) or retraction of the eyelids and birth defects that can make eyelids wide or narrow. These eyelid conditions that commonly need correction can be present in children or adults - acquired either naturally from the aging process or as a result of injury or previous surgery. The following is a list of some of the commonly recognized procedures that can be treated at Marietta Plastic Surgery.
- Ptosis (droopiness) of the lids
- Entropion (in turning) of the eyelids
- Ectropion (out turning) of the eyelids
- Retraction of the eyelids from thyroid disease
- Repair or reconstruction of the eyelids following skin cancer removal or injuries
- Corrective surgery for patients who wear artificial eyes

Tear Duct Surgery
Tear duct surgery, known as dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) or Jones' Tube Placement (artificial tear duct), is performed to repair blockage of the tear duct that often causes excessive watering or recurrent infections of the eye. This condition is commonly caused by previous infection or trauma, or may occur with aging. This surgery is highly successful and long lasting.

Orbital Surgery
Dr. Hanna at Marietta Plastic Surgery has extensive training with surgery of the bony eye socket, to reposition the bones themselves, or to remove tumors and growths that may occur within the socket. Orbital decompression (enlarging the Bony Socket) is a surgical procedure developed to correct the appearance of protruding eyes often caused by Graves Disease or hyperthyroidism. The bony socket is expanded to accommodate the swelling and extra tissue deposited behind the eye, increasing the area available to allow the eye to settle into a normal position. The surgeons work closely with patient's endocrinologist to determine the best timing for surgery.
The bones of the eye socket may be affected by injuries. The doctors at Marietta Plastic Surgery have refined procedures to correct orbital deformities caused by accident or injury in the immediate situation, such as "blow-out fractures." When the bones supporting the eye are crushed, these injuries can create a sunken appearance to the eye and cheekbone, in the long-term situation, requiring surgical reconstruction.

Otoplasty
Ears that are larger than the norm or protrude conspicuously can be a source of extreme embarrassment and ridicule. Children are especially sensitive to this, but adults can also suffer. Marietta Plastic Surgery offers otoplasty to correct large or prominent ears.
Most otoplasty is performed on children and teenagers. By the age of four, the ears are sufficiently formed for corrective surgery. In the case of protruding ears, the most common problem, cartilage can be removed from behind the ear to reposition it closer to the side of the head. Our surgeons can also perform more complex surgery to reduce the size or correct the shape of the ear.

After Facial Contouring Surgery
During the first day or two following rhinoplasty surgery, a patient may experience some facial puffiness, nose aches, stuffiness, bleeding, and even a dull headache. Bruising and swelling around the eyes and nose are also normal, and will reach a peak after three days. Patients who have undergone other facial contouring procedures will experience similar side effects, such as bruising, swelling, and discomfort in the surgery area.
Most of our facial-contouring patients are back at work one to two weeks after their surgery, though exercise and other vigorous activity should be avoided through the third week. Also, it is important that facial contouring patients avoid prolonged heat and sun exposure for several months to avoid damaging the sensitive skin around the site of surgery.
