Breast Augmentation and Implants at Our Atlanta-area Practice

At the Cobb County offices of Marietta Plastic Surgery, we offer our patients breast augmentation procedures that enlarge the breasts to any size, simultaneously improving their shape. Many women with smaller-sized breasts feel self-conscious about the shape of their body. Although breast size and shape varies greatly among women and within an individual woman's life, breasts are ideally somewhat full. Because clothes are generally designed for women with medium-sized breasts, women with smaller breasts often have trouble finding clothes or swimsuits that flatter their figures. Current fashions seem to demand larger breast sizes, with lower necks and increased emphasis on the breast area, forcing some women to wear uncomfortable, often unnatural-looking padded bras, or to forego certain styles. Moreover, women with smaller breasts can often feel unwomanly because they lack the curves that our culture defines as “feminine.” However, our breast implant procedures can permanently give women those feminine curves.

If you want to enjoy all the benefits of increased breast size, including increased self-confidence and better fitting clothes, contact Marietta Plastic Surgery for a consultation on breast implants. Together, you and your Atlanta-area surgeon can discuss your cosmetic goals, and come to a decision about the level of breast augmentation that would give you the best results.

The Breast Implants Procedure

In our Marietta surgery center in Cobb County, near Atlanta, the first step in your breast augmentation surgery, following anesthetization, requires the surgeon to make an incision in the breast. The surgeon will work through this incision to make a pocket and place the implants.

We offer our patients the choice of three incisions types: periareolar, in which the incision is made around the nipple, axilla, in which the incision is made in the armpit, and inframmary, in which the incision is made in the crease where the breast meets the chest. The placement of the incision will dictate what kind of visible scarring you may have, if much at all.

Once the incision has been made, the surgeon lifts the breast tissue and skin to create a pocket and places the breast implant. The surgeon will place the breast implant either above or below the pectoral muscles, which lie directly beneath the breast. The choice of implant placement below the pectoral muscles may decrease breast implant interference with breast exams and mammograms. However, this option also increases post-operative healing time.

In consultation, you and your surgeon will decide which incision and placement will be best for you, based on the condition of your breasts, health concerns, and cosmetic goals. Remember, at Marietta Plastic Surgery, your breast implants procedure will be tailored specifically for you.

Once the implant has been placed, the surgeon centers it beneath the nipple and closes the incision using sutures. The entire procedure typically takes one to two hours, and is performed on an outpatient basis.

After Breast Implant Surgery

After a breast augmentation at our Atlanta-area practice, patients typically experience breast soreness for roughly two to six weeks. During the recovery period, patients may experience under-sensitivity, over-sensitivity, burning, or numbness in the nipples and breast skin. These symptoms go away as breast swelling goes down, a process that typically takes about six weeks. Sutures will be removed one to two weeks after surgery, and patients should return to work after about five days. However, breast implants patients should abstain from rigorous activity and overhead lifting for three weeks.

While the breast implant procedure is usually performed in order to increase breast size, we often recommend breast augmentation to Marietta and Atlanta-area patients who want to correct a loss of breast volume following pregnancy, to balance a difference in breast size, to correct a small amount of breast sagging, or to reconstruct the breast following breast surgery. For those patients who have undergone mastectomy, breast reconstruction is a more complex procedure than traditional augmentation, requiring a graft of tissue. Marietta Plastic Surgery was the first office in the Atlanta area to offer the more advanced DIEP technique of breast reconstruction, and we remain committed to offering the very latest that breast reconstruction has to offer.

Contact our Atlanta-area plastic surgery center today if you have any questions or concerns about breast reconstruction or breast augmentation and implants.
